Plant knowledge. Grow good food.

WHY HOLLOWSTEAD EXISTS

Our story

Hollowstead Seed Co. is run by Benjamin and Emma Thompson. We believe good seed matters—but the knowledge and confidence to grow it matter just as much.

A LIFETIME OF GROWING

This did not start with a storefront.

Benjamin has gardened for as long as he can remember. Over the years that grew from ordinary home gardens into managing a small market farm, starting a perennial food-forest project in Coles County, Illinois, and turning our own land into a food forest.

Growing food changes the way you look at a seed packet. You learn that the variety matters, but so do timing, soil, weather, observation, patience, and knowing what to try when something goes wrong. Most of that knowledge comes one season at a time.

WHY A SEED COMPANY?

Because knowing how to grow food is still useful knowledge.

Our food supply is extraordinarily productive, but it can also be uncertain. Prices move. Weather happens. Supply chains get strange. A home garden does not have to replace the grocery store to matter.

Knowing how to raise tomatoes, beans, herbs, flowers for pollinators, or a few dependable crops gives people another option. It builds resilience, saves useful skills from disappearing, and can put genuinely good food on the table.

SEED + KNOWLEDGE

We want to help people grow something worth eating—and something worth learning from.

Hollowstead is not meant to be a wall of seed packets with a checkout button attached. We want to introduce gardeners to dependable favorites, interesting new varieties, and plants they may not have thought to try, then give them enough practical information to have a real chance of succeeding.

That is why our Growing Guides are part of the company rather than an afterthought. We want the person planting a first tray of tomatoes and the gardener trying a strange pepper for the first time to both be able to find a useful answer.

01

Grow good food.

Choose varieties for flavor, usefulness, curiosity, and the simple satisfaction of harvesting something you raised yourself.

02

Share what works.

Teach clearly, use credible sources, and be honest about what comes from research versus what we have learned first-hand.

03

Keep trying new things.

Gardens should leave room for dependable staples and for the odd, beautiful, delicious variety you have never grown before.

04

Be straightforward.

No invented farm mythology and no pretending sourced seed was grown here. Good seed deserves an honest story.

HOW WE ARE GROWING

Grow what we can. Thoughtfully source the rest.

Hollowstead is still taking root. We currently source seed for the store while we build toward producing and saving more seed ourselves. When a lot is Hollowstead-grown, we will say so. When it is sourced from a seed supplier, we will say that too.

Our goal is not to sound bigger or older than we are. It is to build a seed company that gets more useful, more knowledgeable, and more rooted in its own growing program with every season.

A FAMILY COMPANY

Benjamin and Emma run Hollowstead together.

This is a small family business, which means the decisions about what we carry, what we teach, how we pack an order, and what Hollowstead becomes are close to home. We are building it around the kind of seed company we would want to buy from ourselves: useful, curious, honest, and willing to help.
