Seed inventory & germination worksheet

HOLLOWSTEAD FIELD NOTES

Keep one record for each seed lot. Use the first sheet for inventory and the second for a home germination test.

Download the two-page worksheet (PDF), or print this page from your browser menu. Read the seed storage and germination guide for the method and its sources.

1. Seed inventory

Garden / grower: Season:

Keep packets and lots separate, even when the variety is the same.

Before storing: keep the packet directions and lot identification. Store dry seed in a sealed container in a cool place. After cold storage, let the container warm to room temperature while still sealed before opening.

2. Home germination test

Crop / variety: Lot / year:

Start date: Seeds tested:

Packet's expected germination period:

Temperature / light / pretreatment:

Use clean materials and a moist paper towel in a labeled bag or container. Follow the crop's temperature, light and pretreatment requirements. Keep moist without pooling water. A 10-seed sample is convenient; more seeds give a less coarse estimate. Allow the crop's full expected germination period before judging unsprouted seeds.

Count each germinated seed once. Record weak or abnormal development separately.

Result: germinated ÷ tested × 100 = %

A small home test is a planning estimate, not seed-lot certification or a promise of outdoor establishment. With 10 seeds, one seed changes the result by 10 percentage points. Check the test conditions and repeat a doubtful result when enough seed remains.
